I am not really a big fan of the hanging toilets you can find all over Sumatra. Some say it is more hygienic than a regular Western style toilet but I have to argue that that is really not the case everywhere. It could be more hygienic probably. With the emphasis on ‘could’.
I am really not too fussed when it comes to toilets while we are traveling. If you’re on the road there is usually not a lot of choice. And if you got to go, you got to go. You can choose to get into the bushes, which is really usually the better option but not everywhere as safe as you would like it to be. And those large white buttocks are the ideal landing ground for masses of mosquitos. Trust me. I’ve been there. Not a good thing! So the option is either that or just keeping your breath in and nose closed for a quick visit to the local toilet.
I do say man have the better option…
This toilet was in the mountains in a beautiful spot and was close to our road side restaurant, or however you want to call the shack we had lunch in. It wasn’t much more than a hole in a cement floor. Around the hole there was a horde of little black bees, so you had to be careful when lowering your pants they didn’t creep into your pants while you were doing your thing… They were pretty harmless but still it was a toilet stop with a handicap. Still the best view ever though!
